Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a new wildlife sanctuary. It is located in Tamilnadu state, India. Chief Mister of Tamilnadu announced this as part of the state budget speech on the 20th of March, 2023. This is the 18th wildlife sanctuary in the state of Tamilnadu. It was created on the 21st of March, 2023.
Thanthai Periyar Sanctuary is located in the Erode district. Reserved forest areas of four forest ranges comprise the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Forest Division. i.e., Anthiyur, Bargur, Thattakarai, and Chennampatti. It has an area of 80567 hectares.
Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Park is rich in flora and fauna. It is home to 21 species of mammals, 136 species of Birds, and 118 species of Butterflies. Ten Tigers are there in this park. Elephants, leopards, wild boars, gaurs, and deer are some of the wildlife animals in this new wildlife park in Tamilnadu.
There will not be much impact on the movement of people due to this new wildlife sanctuary, as per the Erode District Forest Officer. However, the mandatory Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) distance is not yet fixed.
The new wildlife sanctuary is part of the Tiger Corridor, connecting the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary, and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. The first two wildlife sanctuaries are in Tamilnadu state. The last two are in Karnataka.
How Do I Go to Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary?
This new wildlife sanctuary is located on the western side of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. It is also adjacent to the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located on the eastern side of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka.
As a new wildlife sanctuary, details of the entry gates and other information on Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary are unavailable. An extraordinary gazette notification will be issued shortly to give full details on the new wildlife sanctuary.
