Shivleni Caves are located in the Ambajogai region of Maharashtra, India. They are a series of square-shaped rock-cut caves. These caves date back to King Udayaditya of the Paramara dynasty of Malwa, who reigned from 1060 to 1087. Some of the inscriptions found here, dating back to the Saka era, refer to this king as Mahamandaleshvar.

These caves are Protected Monuments. It is also an Archaeological Survey of India Heritage Site. Surprisingly, the book “The Cave Temples of India” by James Fergusson and James Burgess, written in 1880, has details of this rock-cut temple.

Deep inside the hill, these caves are situated. It is located half a kilometer northwest of Yogeshvari Temple. It is on the bank of the Jayvanti river. The entrance to the caves is on the southern side of the cave.

Shivleni Cave Details

These caves are Hindu pilgrimage sites. They are dedicated to the Hindu lords: Lord Shiva, Lord Saptamatrukas, and Lord Ganesha.

There is a pavilion in the front portion of the cave. The pavilion has an 8.36 sq m. courtyard in the front. The roof of this pavilion is on four pillars.

A hall named Nandi Mandap is the central hall. (Mandap means hall). It measures 9.14 × 9.14 meters and occupies the center. Thirty-two pillars are there for the hall. Sculptures of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha are there on these pillars.

Some believe that there existed a tunnel connecting the cave to Parli Vaijanath, situated 25 kilometers away.

Aadishakti Mata Yogeshwari Devi Mandir is just 650 meters away from the caves. Jogaidevi is the deity at Aadishakti Mata Yogeshwari Devi Mandir alias Yogeshvari Temple. Shivleni Caves are the wedding court of this deity, as per the belief. Furthermore, as the wedding could not occur due to some supernatural reasons, everything inside the caves turned into stone.
