Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, built the first monument at Dwarka in 400 B.C. It was in memory of his forefathers.

The Dwarakadhish Temple, Dwaraka, is one of the four Hindu temples of the Char Dham Pilgrimage tour. It is believed that every Hindu must visit the 4 Char Dham temples at least once in his or her lifetime to attain salvation. The other three Char Dham temples are the Badrinath temple in Uttarakhand state, Jagannath Puri temple in Odisha state, and Rameswaram temple in Tamilnadu.

Saint Adyaguru Shankaracharya, alias Seer Adi Sankaracharya or Shreemad Adyaguru Shankaracharya

The four Char Dham temples make a perfect square. Badrinath and Rameswaram fall on the same longitude. Also, Dwarka and Puri lie on the same latitude. These four temples represent the farthest points of India that existed during the time of Seer Adi Sankaracharya. He was a Great Hindu philosopher and reformist. He defined the four Char Dham temples. Saint Adyaguru Shankaracharya renovated this temple in 800 A.D. He also established the Adyashakti shrine here on the fourth floor. Saint Adi Sankaracharya also established Dwarka Sharada Math alias Shri Shardapeeth or Shri Sharda Peeth. The objective behind this math was to preserve and propagate Sanatana Dharma and Advaita Vedanta. It is about 650 meters from the Dwarkadhish Temple alias Dwarka Temple.
