Yamunotri is the origin of the holy river the Yamuna. Yamunotri is considered the seat of the Hindu Goddess Yamuna. It is situated in the Uttarakhand state of India, at an altitude of 10,804 feet or 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas.
There are two trekking routes to this holy place. One route is by trekking 13 kilometers from Hanuman Chatti. The second route is from Janki Chatti, and the distance by this route is around six kilometers. The trekking route passes through many rivers and rivulets. Crossing Ruinsara Tal, a clear water lake at the foot of Mount Kalanag takes you to the holy Shrine.
Yamunotri temple visit is part of the Chota Char Dham Yatra (Chota means small and Yatra means tour). Chota 4 Dham Tour Package is the pilgrimage package tour of Yamunothi, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
The temple is open from the Akshaya Tritiya day in May and closes on the Yama Dwitiya day, i.e. Second day after the Diwali festival.
How Do I Go to Yamunotri?
Yamunotri is around 30 kilometers North of Uttarkashi, the district headquarters with the same name. Uttarkashi is well connected to other major cities by road and is easily accessible. It takes a full day’s travel from the nearby major cities like Dehradun, Haridwar, or Rishikesh.
Yamunotri is open from May 3, 2022, without any Covid-related restrictions. There seems to be an increase of around 30 % in room rentals and vehicle hire charges.
Dehra Dun Airport is the nearest airport around 90 kilometers away. Chandigarh airport is around 180 kilometers away. Dehradun railway station is the nearest railway station.
Corona / Kovid 19 Restrictions
350 passes per day are issued to this temple, from July 2020. Residents of the state of Uttarakhand can go to this holy temple, without the entry pass.
