Taj-ul Masajid

Taj-ul-Masajid is the largest Mosque in India. It is situated at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh state. The mosque name means “Crown of Mosques”. Taj-ul-Masajid is a Sunni Muslim mosque. It has a capacity to accommodate 1.75 lack people (0.175 million people).

Taj-ul-Masajid mosque prayer hall is situated on the first floor. The mosque is a mixture of Indo-Islamic architecture and Mughal architecture. Mughal architecture takes precedence over Indo-Islamic architecture. There is a large water tank in the center of the courtyard.

The special feature of this mosque is that it has got a women’s gallery.

Nawab Shah Jahan Begum started in the construction of the Mosque more than two centuries back. After her death in 1901, her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum continued the construction until her death. Then the construction was stopped due to lack of funds, until 1971. Emir of Kuwait donated motifs from 13th century Syrian mosques which was used for the renovation of the entrance in 1971.

There are around 1000 shops on the ground floor. Hindus, Muslims and Jains run these shops for more than eight to ten generations. Hindus and Jains offer prayers to their gods inside their shops, which are situated below the Mosque’s prayer hall.

How do I Go to Taj-ul Masajid alias Tajul Masajid or Taj-ul-Masajid?

This mosque is situated in the heart of the Bhopal city and is well connected by roads to other parts of the city.

Bhopal railway station is at around 2.8 kilometers distance from the Tajul Masajid, the largest mosque in India, at Bhopal. Bhopal international airport is at around 8 kilometers distance from Tajul-Masajid.
