Roopmati Pavilion

Roopmati Pavilion or Rupmati Pavilion, is a large sandstone structure initially meant to be an army observation post. It is situated on a lofty hill near the banks of River Narmada at Mandu in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh state, India.

Rani Roopmati, the consort of Baaz Bahadur has lived here. Baz Bahadur’s palace is situated below Roopmati Pavilion. Narmada River flows through the Nimar plains, located below the Roopmati Pavilion. Queen (Rani) Roopmati has a special admiration for the river.

The buildings in the Rupmati Pavilion have undergone two or three stages of construction spread across different periods.

The original structure consists of a massive hall and two rooms at both ends on the eastern side. It was meant for the military to watch any possible enemy attacks. Narmada plains are at a depth of 365.8 meters from the original structure.

On the western side of the plinth of the original block on the slope of the hill, you can see the remaining parts of the structure.

How do I go to Roopmati Pavilion?

Roopmati Pavilion is situated at Mandu, which is around 95 kilometers from Indore, the most populous city in Madhya Pradesh. Two direct buses ply between Indore and Mandu. The first bus starts at 8 am from the Gangwal Bus Stand and the other at 2 pm from Sarawate Bus Stand. It takes around 3 hours to cover the distance between Indore and Mandu by these buses.

Dhar, the district headquarters, is the nearest town to the Rupmati Pavilion around 35 kilometers away. It is in between Indore and Mandu. There are regular buses to Mandu from Dhar. Indore is also well connected by frequent buses from Dhar.

The nearest railway station to the Rupmati Pavilion is at Indore. Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport at Indore is the nearest airport to Roopmati Pavilion.
