Papanasam Agasthiyar Falls

Papanasam Agasthiyar Falls (Papanasam Falls) is in Thirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu state, India. This fall is situated near Papanasam alias Pavanasam town. It is on the Western Ghats.

Water at Papanasam Falls is rich in medicinal value as it flows through the thick forests that are rich in Flora. The area surrounding the falls is rich in flora and fauna and is part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Kutralam Water Falls is a major waterfall near this falls at Papanasam. There are three major falls at Kutralam, namely, Old Falls, Tiger Falls, and Five Falls.

Trekking to Pavanasam Falls is a major activity here.

Papanasanathar Temple

Pavanasam has a special place in Hinduism. The legend is that it is at Papanasam where Lord Shiva appeared in his marriage costume to sage Agasthya. Papanasanathar Temple is a famous temple in this town. It has a seven-tiered gopuram. (Gopuram is the gateway tower in Hindu temples.)

The main deity here is Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is called Papanasanathar in this temple. God Shiva’s concert Goddess Parvathi is worshiped as Ulagammai here.

Brahmotsavam festival is the main festival at this temple. It is held during the middle of April -May. Thaipoosam during the middle of January – February, is another major festival of this temple.

How Do I Go to Papanasam Agasthiyar Falls?

Agasthiyar Falls is near Papanasam town. This fall is 50 kilometers west of Tirunelveli and is well connected by road, rail, and air.

PML is the Papanasam Railway station’s code. Tirunelveli is the nearest major railway station, where all trains stop.

Tuticorin Airport is the nearest airport to the falls. Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram airports are the closest international airports to the Falls at Papanasam.
