About Njandirukki Falls
Njandirukki Waterfalls (also spelled Jandirukki Falls) is a stunning, crab-pressed-shaped cascade located near Thodupuzha in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. Locally known as ഞണ്ടിറുക്കി വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം, this hidden waterfall is also called Poomala Waterfalls, as it lies close to the scenic Poomala town. Falling from a height of nearly 200 feet, the waterfall gets its unique name from its shape—Njandu means crab and iruiki means pressed or squeezed in many South Indian languages.
Surrounded by thick forests, natural rock formations, and lush greenery, Njandirukki Falls remains one of the lesser-known and least-explored waterfalls in Kerala, making it a perfect escape for those seeking tranquillity and unspoiled natural beauty.
Trekking and Viewpoints
Visitors can experience the waterfall in two different ways:
1. Trek to the Bottom of the Falls
A moderately easy trail takes you to the foot of the waterfall, where you can enjoy the refreshing mist and even take a dip in the small natural pond. The area is calm and ideal for photography, relaxation, and enjoying the soothing sound of the cascading water.
2. Trek to the Mid-Level Viewpoint
Another trek leads to a scenic viewpoint located halfway up the falls. This route passes through a private property, but the landowner is known to allow visitors, so there is no need to worry. This viewpoint offers a beautiful panoramic view of the waterfall and the dense forest valley below.
Nature lovers, trekkers, and offbeat travelers will find both routes rewarding, especially during or just after the monsoon season.
