Kanger Valley National Park alias Kanger Ghati National Park

Kanger Valley National Park, alias Kanger Ghati National Park, is located in Bastar District, Chhattisgarh state, India. It is well known for its biodiversity,  waterfalls, and Caves with Stalactites and Stalagmites Formations.

Some of the finest stalactites and stalagmites caves are in this national park. Dandak Caves, Devgiri Cave, Kailash Caves, Kutumsar Caves, etc., are marvelous limestone caves. These formations take place over millions of years.

Kanger Valley National Park is a habitat for the state bird,  Common Hill myna alias  Bastar Hill Myna. The most famous falls in the state, Tirathgarh Waterfalls (a Milky Fall), is inside this national park.

This Park was declared as a national park of India in 1982. Kanger Valley is spread over a distance of around 34 kilometers. It’s very scenic and has an area of approximately 200 square kilometers.

Kanger River flows through the park.   Kanger Ghati National Park got its name from this river. This national park is also the catchment area for the Godavari River.

Kanger Ghati National Park is rich in flora and fauna. 553 floral species are found in this national park. It is also an anthropologist’s paradise. Kanger Valley Park has a sizable tribal population.

A three-kilometer-long nature trail from the Kamanar barrier to Tirathgarh waterfalls is one of the famous nature trails here.  Another popular nature trail is the one-and-a-half-kilometer-long nature trail from Kailash cave to the Kailash barrier.

How Do I Go to Kanger Valley National Park?

Jagdalpur, the administrative headquarters of Bastar District at around 20 kilometers distance, is the nearest major city to the national park. The nearest railway station is situated at Jagdalpur.

The state capital of Raipur, around 330 kilometers away, has the nearest airport.

There are forest rest houses at Kotamsar and Tirathgarh. There are a lot of hotels in Jagdalpur town.

November – June is the ideal time to visit Kanger Ghati National Park, alias Kanger Valley National Park.

  1. The only Stalactite, Stalagmite caves I’ve seen is Borra in Andhra Pradesh and I was severely disappointed. I really hope, to visit this and hope this won’t be as disappointing as Borra.

  2. Wow, this Kanger Ghati National Park is another gem of India that I should really experience myself soon. I love that it features so much of natures beauty including wild animals like monkey. The Cavern is something that made me excited since I find spelunking very interesting and a thrilling adventure to experience.

    India is a lovely country and I am really sad the people don’t take care of their monuments. Kanger Ghati National Park looks like an amazing place to be. Next time I visit India I will definitely drop by.
