Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is a Project Tiger Reserve to save Bengal tigers. The maximum number of Bengal Tigers are found in this Tiger reserve.

Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve have an area of 105 square kilometers. The buffer zone of the national park is spread over an area of 820 square kilometers. Bandhavgarh means Brother’s Fort. The name is derived from the great epic of Ramanaya. The hillock named Bandhavgarh was given by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana, to keep a watch on Sri Lanka, where Lord Rama’s consort Goddess Sita was abducted and held.

The Park is rich in Flora and Fauna. This park is home to white tigers. The first White Tiger, Mohan, was captured by Maharaja Martand Singh in 1951 from this area. There is a white tiger safari, the only one of its kind in the world, at this national park. Elephant Safari is also there in the park. Leopards and various species of deer are seen in large numbers.

Bandhavgarh Fort is a very ancient fort inside the park, believed to be 2000 years old. There are 39 caves inside the Bandhavgarh fort. The oldest cave belongs to the first century. The largest cave with several pillars and small rooms dates back to the 10th century. There are embossed figures and inscriptions on the caves.

The second most photographed tigress, Sita which appeared on the covers of National Geographic, is in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. Charger, who has the habit of charging at elephants (and tourists also but do not harm) is also seen in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. There are 22 Tigers in the 105 square kilometers core area of the Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. Unlike other parks, you have a better chance to see a Tiger at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.
