Amritapuri Ashram is at Vallikavu village.  It is near Karunagappally town in Kollam district, Kerala. It is also the headquarters of Mata Amritanandamayi Math.

Mata Amritanandamayi of Amritapuri Ashram

Matha Amritanandamayi was born as the third child of Mr. Sugunanandan and Mrs. Damayanti, in a fishermen’s family. She founded Mata Amṛtanandamayi Math in 1981. Her disciples call her  “Amma”. Amma means mother in many of the Indian languages.

Mata Amritanandamayi always hugs her disciples or visitors, before talking to them. Therefore, she is known as a hugging saint to her disciples. She has visited a large number of foreign countries and is regular in visiting Amma’s NYC disciples and disciples across the USA, every year.

Amritapuri Ashram at Amritapuri is spread over more than 100 acres of land. Moreover, it is also the headquarters of Amrita University. Amrita University offers different courses; mainly in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamilnadu. Amritapuri Campus and Kochi Campus are the main campuses in Kerala. Tamilnadu campus is at Coimbatore. There are two campuses in Karnataka state: Bengaluru and Mysuru. In addition to colleges, Amritapuri Ashram runs many schools.

Amrita Institute of Medical Science (Amrita Hospital) is the leading hospital in India, founded by Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.

Embracing the World

Amma Ashram has a charitable trust, Embracing the World, a leading charity foundation among global charities, which does a lot of humanitarian and social welfare work. They did commendable work as a Charitable Organization when the worst Tsunami hit Indian shores in 2004. They helped in providing food and shelter. Embracing the World took up the restoration works and has built around 6000 houses for the worst Tsunami victims.

Sanitation projects were also done under the Ashram during the famous annual Sabarimala Temple pilgrimage season. Amma has donated a sum of $15 million US $ $15 million in 2015, to construct toilets for the poor, who live along the Ganges River.

How Do I Go to Amritapuri Ashram?

Amritapuri Ashram is around nine kilometers from Karunagappally railway station. Karunagappally is situated between Kayamkulam Junction and Kollam Junction railway stations on the Palakkad – Thiruvananthapuram railway line. Kayamkulam railway station is around 15 kilometers distance from the Amma Ashram.

Karunagappally Bus stand is the nearest main bus stand from where buses to Amritapuri Ashram are available. Cabs and auto-rickshaws are also available from Karunagappally.
