Udaipur is historic capital city of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar. The city is dotted with a large number of artificial lakes and hence known as “Lake City”. This historic city is best known for its culture, history, palaces and scenic locations. The city is located at an altitude of 1,962 feet or 598.00 meters.
Maharana Udai Singh, King of Mewar, founded this city in the year 1553. He shifted the capital of his Kingdom of Mewar from Chittorgarh to Udaipur. king also made a city wall extending six kilometers in length, with 7 gates and is known as the walled city or old city.
There are a large number of lakes, all of which are interlinked. This helps in recharging ground water levels of city’s water resources. Lakes in the city are Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Rang Sagar, Kumharia Talab, Swaroop Sagar, Goverdhan Sagar. There are three lakes on the upper basin of the city and one lake on the lower basin. Ahar River feeds these lakes.
