Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad city is one of the three National Art Museums in India.
Salar Jung Museum on the banks of Musi River at Hyderabad.
This Museum has the most extensive collection of antiques belonging to one single person. Salar Jung Museum’s massive collection of sculptures, carvings, textiles, manuscripts, ceramics, metallic artifacts, clocks, paintings, carpets, furniture, etc, were sourced from Nawab Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889-1949), former Prime minister of the 7th Nizam (erstwhile ruler of the princely state) of Hyderabad. There were many more valuable items in his collection. Few of such priceless collection items from the national museum are believed to have been siphoned by his employees. Some other things were siphoned off during the collection transfer from the original museum, Diwan Deodi, to the present museum, Salar Jung Museum.
Salar Jung Museum Collections
Some of the priceless items in the Museum include Raja Ravi Varma Paintings, the Sword of the Great Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the Great Mysore King Tipu Sultan’s wardrobe, a gold and diamond-made Tiffin box, etc, to name a few. Jade-crafted daggers belonging to the Mughal Emperor Jehangir and Emperor Shah Jahan (son of Jehangir) and Noorjahan (wife of Jehangir and step-mother of Shah Jahan) are also part of the collection at the Museum on the banks of Musi River.
Salar Jung Museum Clock
The musical clock at the Hyderabad Museum is very popular with tourists. This 19th-century Musical clock has a bearded man’s toy figure on the left side of the watch, which comes out from the enclosure precisely three minutes before every hour. On completion of each hour, this bearded man strikes the bell as per the number of the hour. i.e., The Bearded toy man strikes the Bell 10 times at 10 O’clock. There is another bearded man on the right side, who strikes every second.
