Dancing girls at Rock Garden, Chandigarh
This garden at Chandigarh is also called Nek Chand’s Rock Garden, named after its founder, Nek Chand.
More than half a century back, Nek Chand secretly worked in his spare time, collecting waste materials and placing them in the park. 18 years later, this was noticed by government officials in 1975. Nek Chand’s work was considered illegal as the area was a forest. The park would have been demolished without public support. Due to public support, Nek Chand was appointed as an Engineer in charge of the park. He had 50 workers at his disposal for continuing the work.
Nek Chand continued his work for another 22 years. He left India for a short US tour in 1997 to participate in presentations and exhibitions on the Rock Garden theme. When Nek Chand returned, he found that vandals had partially destroyed the garden. It seems to be a deliberate and organized attack on the park. Chandigarh authorities removed the staff working there when he left for the USA. There were strong objections from politicians and the government to allowing the park to continue. Slowly, he got public support. After a long-drawn legal battle, he won the case to run the park.
Now, this beautiful Rock Park is manned by the Nek Chand Foundation. It is a non-profit organization set up for the completion, preservation, and awareness of this garden park. It was set up after he got support from different parts of the world,
