About Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary
Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary is a protected area and a bird sanctuary in Tirupur district, Tamilnadu, India. It is also a Ramsar site of International importance. Its a very small bird sanctiary, with an area of just 1.26 sqaure kilometrs, or 125.9 hacters.

Nanjarayan Sanctuary was delared as a bird sanctuary in 2022. It was the 17th bird sanctuary in the state of Tamilnadu. It was declared as a Ramsar site in 2024.
The lake is named after the local King Nanjarayan, who carried out major restoration works around 400 years ago during his reign
This Bird Sanctuary is centred around a fresh water lake, fed by Nallar River, a tributary of the Noyyal River that runs through Tirupur city. This wetland is offically known as Nanjarayan Tank Bird Sanctuary or Sarkar Periyapalayam Reservoir. Tamilnadu state forest deaprtment has jurisdiction over this wetland. This lake is a natural inland lake.
Flora & Fauna
191 species of birds are found here, along with other flora and fauna. Bar-headed Goose, Heronry, Northern shoveler, Spot-billed Pelican, etc., are some of the notable bird species found here. 62 plant species are there in this protected Ramsar ite. Various species of Mammals, Butterflies, Reptiles and Ambhibians can also be seen in this protected area.
How Do I Go to Nanjarayan Ramsar Site cum Bird Sanctuary?
Nanjarayan sanctuary is situated in the Neruperichal and Sarkar Periyapalayam villages. The sanctuary is at around 10 kilomerers from Tiruppur town, also known as the textile city. The bird sanctuary is on the northern side of the Tiruppur-Uthukuli road and is easily accessible by road from Tiruppur.
