Nageswaraswamy temple or Nageswaran temple is a Lord Shiva temple at Kumbakonam in Tamilnadu, India. Lord Shiva is workshopped here as Nagaraja, the serpent king. The Nataraja (dancing Shiva) shrine is especially famous for its life-size sculptures and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Chola art.

Nageswara Swamy Temple Architecture
It is great marvel of Chola architecture, building technology and astronomy. Sunlight directly enters into the temple. During the Tamil month of Chithirai (April/May), it sunlight falls on the sanctum. It is called the Surya Kottam or Keezha Kottam. The Sanctum Sanctorum of this temple is similar to Sarangapani Temple alias Thirukudanthai, or Kumbakonam koyil, at Kumbakonam. It is made in the form of a Chariot.
This temple is the earliest of all Chola temples. The oldest structues dates back to the 9th century, built during the Chola dynasty by King Aditya Chola. The towering gopuram and gatehouses were adding later during the 16th century, by the Thanjavur Nayaks. There are threee gateway towers or gopurams, in the eastern, western and southern directions. There are many shrines, the prominent ones are that of Nageswarar, Pralayamkathanathar and Periyanayagi. There are many halls and three precincts. The second precinct, built during the Vijayanagar period, has many sculptures.
