About Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary

Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary is located 50 kilometers northwest of Hyderabad city in Sangareddy district of Telangana State in India.

Originally it was intended to be a mugger crocodile sanctuary. Around 50 years back, there were jsut four pairs of mugger crocodiles in Manjira sanctuary. Now it has a population of 400 to 600 mugger crocodiles. It now has 73 species of birds too, other than crocodiles.

The man-made reservoir inside Manjira wildlife sanctuary provides drining water to the twin cites of  Hyderabad and Secundarabad. This dam is a tourist attraction here. Manjira River flows through this sanctuary for 36 kilometers.  Nine small islands are there inside the sanctuary, with extensive marshy fringes which are home to nesting of aquatic birds. Other birds too find their home in the thick forests of this sanctuary.

The freshwater provides ideal confitions for the vegetation. The area is rich in flora and fauna. The Indian hare, jackal, mongoose  and wild boar are seen here. Othe than Crocodiles, Cobras, monitor lizard, mugger crocodile and turtles are found in this sanctuary.

Places of Toursit Interest

A temple inside the sanctuary at Kalabgur village on the banks of the river, is believed to have been built some 800 years back, during the reign of Kakatiya dynasty. This Lord Shiva temple, made of stone, is known for its excellent architectural style.  Lord Krishna, Lord Ganapathy and Goddess Saraswathi are also workshipped in this temple.

An Environmental Education Centre  is there inside the park, with a museum, library, and an auditorium. Boat services are available. Bird watching is another activity here.

Season to visit Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary

Sangareddy Town is the nearest town at 5 kilometers from the sanctuary.

November to March is the ideal season visit this sanctuary. You can stay at any of the inspection bungalowa at Sangareddy, Singur and Sadasivapet.
