Lohagarh Fort is at Bharatpur town in eastern Rajasthan, close to the Uttar Pradesh border. The Bharatpur Jat King, Maharaja Suraj Mal, built this fort.
Maharaja Suraj Mal constructed many forts and places during his reign. Undoubtedly, this fort is the strongest fort in India. There are two gates to the fort. While the north gate is known as Ashtdhaatu, the south gate is known as Chowburja.
There are three important monuments inside the fort: Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, and Kothi Khas. Jawahar Burj was added in 1765 to celebrate the victory over the Mughals in the battle of Delhi in 1764. This building was used for the coronation ceremony of the Kings. In 1805, Fateh Burj was constructed to commemorate his victory over the British at the Siege of Bharatpur (1805). The fort was built in the Jat style of architecture.
Presently, This fort belongs to the Rajasthan state government. Inside the fort, there is the Bharatpur Government Museum. It displays artifacts of the local rajas (rajas means kings).
