Korigad Fort

Korigad fort alias Koraigad, Koarigad or Kumwarigad is located about 18 kilometers south of Lonavala, near Pune, in Maharastra state, India.

This fort is at an altitude of 923 meters, at least 200 meters above its surrounding valley. It is believed to be cosntructed around 1500 A.D. It was constructed by the great Maratha Emperor, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1818, this fort landed into the British hands.

Aamby Valley city, the first planned private city in India, is built ove the fort’s southern and eastern foothills. Two artificial lakesthat are part of the Aamby Valley are there, to the east of this historic fort. there are two lakes on the top of the fort, too.

You can walk along the entire perimeter of the fort, as its intact.  The massive entrance gate is also intact. But, some of the structues inside the fort are ruined. Laxmi Toph Cannon is the larest cannon inside the fort. near the Korai Devi temple.

Temples inside the Korigad Fort

Korai Devi temple or KoraiDevi temple, along with two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are there inside the ancient fort. Korai Devi temple is the main temple inside the fort, dedicated to the patron goddess Korai devi.

Trekking to the Top of the Fort

There are very limited public transportation facilites to reach the fort. Please arrange your own mode of transport. You need to take the Aamby Valley road from Lonavla, till Peth Shahpur village. There you can park the vehicle on the road and then trek to the top of the fort.

Trekking to the fort is quite easy, even for a beginner, or one with an average level of fitness. The two kilometer trekking involves climbing stairs. It may take around 45 minutes to one hour. It may be sligtly slippery during mansoon season.
