Khardung La Pass is in the Leh district of the Indian union territory of Ladakh. This pass connects the Indus river valley and the Shyok river valley. It is also the gateway to the Nubra valley, also known as Dumra. Siachen Glacier lies beyond the Nubra valley. This pass is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
The elevation of Khardung La mountains is 5,359 meters (17,582 feet). In 1976, construction of a motorable road started and it was opened to the public in 1988. This pass is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation of the Indian government.
History of the Pass
This pass was a major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asian regions like China and Tibet. It was used by thousands of horses and camels before motorable roads were laid
How Do I Go to Khardung La Pass?
This pass is at a distance of 39 kilometers by road from Leh, the nearest major town to the pass. Pullu and South Pullu are the two bases on either side of the pass.
You need to get an Inner Line Permit (ILP) if you are not a local resident. The District Commissioner’s office in Leh issues this permit on producing Identity Proof and fulfilling other requirements. Photocopies of the permits are to be deposited on request at the check posts.
Travelers often pause at the top to admire the breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and fluttering prayer flags. The thin air can be challenging, so acclimatization in Leh is highly recommended before attempting the ascent. Small tea stalls at checkpoints offer warm refreshments, adding to the unique experience of this high-altitude journey.
There are inordinate delays on certain days due to avalanches, road accidents, traffic congestion on narrow one-lane sections, washouts, etc., so be prepared for such eventualities.
