Elephant Falls is close to Shillong city, in East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya state, India.
Elephant Falls is a group of three adjacent falls. The falls were previously known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew. The British renamed it as Elephant Falls because they noticed a rock resembling an elephant near the left side of the bottom falls. This rock is no more as an earthquake in the late 18th century destroyed it. The ferns cover the rocks near the falls.
Tourists are allowed to go very close to each of the three falls. It is easily accessible from the road. There is a walking path and stairs to reach and watch the falls. The first fall is broad and partly covered by the forest. The second fall is small, and the third is the tallest among the three falls. However, you must climb the slippery stairs to reach each level of the falls. There are benches to relax near the first and second levels. There is also a bridge between the second and third falls.
Cherapunjee, one of the wettest places on Earth, is a nearby town to Shillong.
