Brahma Temple Goa

Introduction to Brahma Temple

Nestled within the tranquil forested landscape of Nagargaon and beside a gentle stream, the Brahma Karmali Temple offers visitors not just a spiritual experience but also a moment of serene escape. As tradition holds, the idol was safeguarded and relocated several times during the turbulent Portuguese era, lending the site an aura of resilience and devotion. Arriving early in the morning heightens the experience, as the rising sun filters through leafy canopy and birdsong accompanies the ringing of temple bells. In this peaceful ambience, one can reflect on the timeless concepts of creation, preservation and transformation embodied by the Trimurti, and feel connected to the rhythm of nature and ancient faith.

About Karmali Temple

Brahma Temple is one of the oldest temples in Goa, with an intricately carved 12th-century Brahma idol as the main deity.

This temple is known officially as Brahma Karmali Temple. It has the deity of Lord Brahma, the supreme creator of the holy trinity, as per Hindu belief. The deity belongs to the 12th century, the Kadamba Dynasty period. The Kadambas were good at art, architecture, etc. The deity Brahma is shown as “Trimurti” (a combination of three): the Trinity of Lord Brahma, the creator, Lord Vishnu, the preserver, and Lord Shiva, the destroyer or transformer.

During the Portuguese invasion and subsequent rule of Goa around five centuries back, the idol was taken out of the original temple at Karmali alias Carambolim village on the island of Tiswadi. The idol was later installed at Sattari, then at Valpoi, and finally at a small shrine at Nagargaon, on the banks of a stream in a dense forest.

This temple is Goa’s most famous temple.
