Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is the third-largest Zoo in India. It is located inside the Kambalakonda reserve forest near Visakhapatnam city, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Visakhapatnam is also known as Vizag. Hence, this zoo is known as Vizag Zoo.
On 19 May 1977, this Zoological park, named after the former prime minister Indira Gandhi, was declared open to the public. This Zoological park is spread over 253 hectares (625 acres) of land. The Eastern Ghats surround three sides of the park, while the Bay of Bengal is on one side.
There are around 843 animals belonging to 123 species inside this Zoo. It is estimated that approximately a million people visit this Zoo, annually.
This park has been breeding endangered species for many years. Breeding of White Tigers needs special mention in this regard. Breeding of Dholes, Gaur, Jackal, Nilgai, Sambars, Porcupine, Grey Jungle Fowl, Painted Storks, Grey Herons, Black Bucks, etc., are to name some of the other breeding success stories.
There is a butterfly park named Butterfly World inside the Zoological Park. There are no extra entry charges to Butterfly Park. The zoo offers Lion Safari & Herbivores Safari at extra charges. There is a proposal to add White Tiger Safari. White Tiger Safari is expected to cost INR 50 per adult and INR 30 per child (aged between 3 and 12)
Vizag Zoo allows the public to adopt an animal for a certain period. E-Webinars and Quizzes are also conducted, and E-Certificates are issued for the participants by the Zoological Park.
How do I go to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park?
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located at Yendada, Visakhapatnam, a city on the Bay of Bengal sea coast. It is easily accessible by road.
Visakhapatnam city has a major railway station and an international airport.
There is also the Dwaraka bus station, where you will get a bus to the Zoological Park. The approximate distance from this bus station to the Zoological Park is around seven kilometers.
Zoo timings are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on all days, except Mondays. Entry charges are INR 50 per adult and INR 10 per child (between 3 and 12). Entry is free for those below three years of age.
