Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace or the ‘Amba Vilas Palace’ as it is known officially, is the official residential palace of the Wodeyars, the erstwhile royal family of the Princely state of Mysore in Karnataka State, India.

Mysore Palace is one of the many Palaces found in and around Mysore. It is a major tourist attraction which is a three storied stoned structure that blends together Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic styles of architecture. Mysore Palace is considered as a masterpiece in Indo Saracenic architecture.

This palace is one of the most visited India tourist places with lacks of people visiting the Mysore palace every year. South India tourism packages during Dessara season normally includes a visit to Mysore palace and the Brindavan Gardens at Mysore. General public can enter the palace and enjoy the architecture and the beauty of this palace by paying a small entry fee.

‘Wodeyars’ were the rulers of the Mysore princely state for centuries till Indian independence. They made Mysore their capital in the 14th century and the current Mysore palace construction was started in 1897 and completed in 1912. The current palace was renovated in 1940.

This Palace at Mysore is famous for the Desara festival (mostly in September/October). On the tenth day of Desara festival, there is parade with caparisoned elephants and other floats, which make it very colorful and is now an integral part of Mysore culture and is a highlight of the Karnataka tourism festival. Mysore tourism industry will be at its best during the Desara festival  season.

How do I Go to Mysore Palace?

Mysore palace is in  the heart of Mysore city, the second biggest city in the state of Karnataka. It is well connected by road and rail. Mysore railway station is the nearest railway station to Mysore palace. Bangalore alias Bangaluru airport at 140 kilometers distance is the nearest airport. The Group of Monuments at the temple town of Hampi,  is at 420 kilometers distance.
