Muthupet Lagoon and Sanctuary

Muthupet Lagoon is located on the River Cauvery delta near the Bay of Bengal in Tamilnadu, India. It is spread over an area of around 6,803 hectares. Some portions of the Lagoon are covered with mangroves.

Rivers Koraiyar, Kilaithankiyar, Marakkakoraiyar, Paminiyar, and tributaries of the Cauvery River flow through this scenic area. There are many canals and sub-canals here, which the Tamil Nadu Forest Department maintains.

Muthupet reserve forests cover the Lagoon. The average depth of the waters of the Lagoon is around 1 meter. The lagoon bed is covered with a slit. Tides play a major role in dispersing the mangrove seeds. Point Calimere Sanctuary is situated close to this area.
