Mandu is a city known for its fortress and is a ruined city, located in the Dhar district of Western Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Fort city of Mandu is situated at an altitude of 2079 feet. This city was prominent during the 10th and 11th centuries under the Paramaras. The fortress is a 13-kilometer long one, overlooking the plateau of Malwa and the Narmada River valley on the Northern and Southern sides, respectively.

Mandu has a rich and ancient history. The walls of the fort span around 37 kilometers, punctuated by 12 gateways. There are several palaces, Jain temples and mosques of the 14th century, and other buildings. Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, the marble tomb of the ruler inside the fort, is the first marble structure in India.

Hindola Mahal, which means Swing palace, is a palace inside the palace complex. It is believed to be constructed in the 14th or 15th century. Jahaz Mahal or Ship Palace is another magnificent palace situated inside the fort between two artificial lakes, and it looks like a ship floating in the water. Other prominent buildings inside the palace complex are Tawili Mahal and Nahar Jharokha.

Some of the ancient and historic structures inside the fort are listed below. Roopmati’s Pavilion is a Large Sandstone Structure. Baz Bahadur’s Palace is a 16th-century palace below Roopmati’s Pavilion. Rewa Kund is a reservoir intended to supply water to Roopmati’s Pavilion.

Jami Masjid is the finest structure inside the fort. Jama Masjid, the oldest mosque inside the fort, dates back to 1405.
