Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

Daman and Diu are two coastal districts in the Union Territory of India on the Arabian Sea coast. Daman shares its border with Maharashtra state and Diu with Gujarat state. With effect from 26 January 2020, the neighboring union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli was added to Daman and Diu. It was named as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Gujrat surrounds Dadra. Nagar Haveli is wedged in between Gujrat and Maharashtra states. Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a district of the newly named Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Union territory. They were Portuguese colonies til 1954. It then became an independent political entity for approximately seven years after pro-India forces took control of it. On 11 August 1961, it was formally annexed by India and named the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Daman & Diu are two separate districts. They were part of the Portuguese colonies in India even after Indian independence. Both were made part of India on 19th December 1961 by military conquest. This Union Territory was known as Goa, Daman, and Diu until 1987, when Goa was granted statehood.

This Union Territory of India is known for its historic buildings, churches, forts, and beaches. Tourism is the primary industry here. St. Paul’s Church, Diu Fort, Water Fort Prison with a watchtower overlooking the Diu Fort, Nadia Caves, etc., are some of the main tourist attractions in Diu. Moti Daman Fort, Daman Freedom Memorial, Nani Daman Fort, and the church inside the fort, etc, are some of the main tourist sites in Daman.

Daman & Due are 72 and 40 square kilometers in area, respectively. This Union Territory of India lies at around 650 kilometers distance from each other.

How Do I Go to Daman and Diu?

Vapi railway station, with station code VAPI, is the nearest railway station to Daman at around 12 kilometers, on the Western railway line. Diu Airport, with IATA code DIU, has commercial flights to Mumbai and Porbander. Daman has an Airport; there are no commercial flights from here, and it is used as an Indian Navy airbase.

Surat and Mumbai are around 125 and 150 kilometers distance, respectively, from Daman.
