Gorumara National Park is a National park and Wildlife sanctuary, situated on the Himalayan foothills in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, India.  This national park is a major habitat for the Indian Rhinos.

Gorumara reserved forests was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1949.   Initially, Gorumara National Park had an area of just seven square kilometers. Now, it is spread over an area of around 80 square kilometers. This national park was declared as the best protected National park in India,  for the year 2009.

This wildlife park is situated on the flood-plains of the Murti and Raidak Rivers. Jaldhaka river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra river, flows thorugh this national park. This National park is  situated very close to Jaldapara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Reserve.

Gorumara national park safari is available inside the Gorumara forests.

There are no human habitation inside this wildlife park. However, some 10,000 villagers from nearby villages are dependent on this wildlife sanctuary, for their source of income.

The Gorumara wildlife sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. There are around 50 species of mammals, 194 bird species, 22 reptile species,  seven turtle species  and  27 fish specie, inside Gorumara national park.

There are 4 watch towers inside the wildlife sanctuary. Jatraprasad Watch Tower, Chandrachur Watch Tower (which is situated near Murti forest bungalow),  Rhino Observation Point (near the Gorumara forest bungalow) and Chukchuki Bird-watching Point.

Dhupjhora Elephant Camp

Dhupjhora Elephant Camp is situated on the periphery of this national park. There are a large number of Elephants in the park. Many accidents involving Elephants were reported from the area.

Accommodation in and Around Gorumara National Park

The Gorumara forest bungalow, which was built during the regime of the British, has a log book of the visitors who stayed here, right from its inception days!

You can go for a Gorumara jungle camp at the ancient Gorumara forest rest house.

There are no hotels inside the national park. However, there are a large number of good hotels outside the national park. River Wood Forest Retreats is a 4 star resort overlooking the Gorumara national park is one among them. There are many other hotels and resorts at Lataguri and Ramsai towns. Both these towns are on the fringes of the national park.

There are a few government forest department cottages at Kalipur village, near the Gorumara National park.

How Do I Go to Gorumara National Park?

Jalpaiguri  is is nearest major city at around 32 kilometers from the national park. New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station is the major station at this city. Bagdogra Airport is situated at Siliguri.

Siliguri is the nearest major town at around 70 kilometers distance from the national park. Lataguri and Ramsai are two small towns, on the periphery of the national park.

Jalpaiguri   is the twin city of Siliguri, at 35 kilometers distance from Siliguri.

The national park is open from 6 am to 5 pm.

Jaldapara National Park is a wildlife sanctuary and national park on the banks of Torsa River in Alipurduar District of West Bengal, India. Jaldapara sanctuary is well known for the Elephant safari trips.

Jaldapara National Park was previously known as Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located at the the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. This wildlife sanctuary was established in 1941 and is spread over 216.51 square kilometers.  It was declared as a National Park of India in 2012.

Jaldapara sanctuary is also habitat to Great Indian one horned Rhino or Asatic onehorned Rhino. This national park has the second largest single horned rhinos in India. (Kaziranga National Park in the nearby state of Assam has the largest population of Indian one horned rhinos.)

Jaldapara National Park is also rich in flora and fauna. This park has a large number of bird species and is an ornithologists paradise. Bengal florican, a rare bird species, can be seen here.

Jaldapara National Park has a large number of elephants. This Wildlife sanctuary offers Elephant Safari trips. These safari trip booking is not done in advance, as climatic conditions determines whether it is possible or not.

Chilapata reserved forest is a nearby forest. Its  an elephant corridor connecting Jaldapara National Park with Buxa Tiger reserve. Jeep safari is also available inside Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary.

Jaldapara museum is a nearby museum, mainly for the children.

Khayerbari Tiger Rescue Center is a nearby tourist destination at around 15 kilometers distance. Tigers and leopard  can be seen here. You can see the them from the watch tower or by traveling in the battery operated vehicle.

How Do I Go to Jaldapara National Park or Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary?

Jaldapara National Park is at a distance of around 125 kilometers from Siliguri town. It takes around 3 hours drive to reach Silguri. Alipurduar town, the district head quarters,  is at around 48 kilometers away.

Madarihat  railway station, a small railway station,  is at around 7 kilometers from the National park and is the nearest railway station to the wildlife sanctuary. NH 31 connecting Siliguri with Hasimara passes though Madarihat  town. Hasimara town is at around 11 kilometers away. Goverment buses from Siliguri to Alipurduar passes through Madarihat  town.

Birpara and Hasimara railway stations are at around 20 kilometers distance, where all express trains stops. New Jalpaiguri  Junction railway station (NJP) in West Bengal state is the nearest major railway station at around 120 kilometers distance.

Bagdograairport is the nearest airport at around 140 kilometers distance. This airport is at a distance of 12 kilometers from Siliguri.

Jalpaiguri is at around 73 kilometers away from the national park cum wildlife sanctuary.

Tinchuley,Takdah & Mongpu – 3 Eco-friendly Mt Kanchenjunga Villages


Tinchuley is a small village in the snow peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga, at an altitude of 5,800 feet,  in Darjeeling district, West Bengal state, India. It is slowing gaining popularity as a village tourism destination. Three ridges meets at Tinchuley.

17 families are involved in the village tourism program. Some of their homes has been converted into home stays or guest houses.  They also indulge in organic farming.

Orange orchard farms, Tea Gardens, etc, are the main tourist attractions here at Tinchuley. Orange Orchards of Nirmal is at around 8 kilometers from here. Rungli Rungliot and Peshoke Tea Estate are two well known tea estates here. Darjeeling Tea is a Geo-protected tea from this district.

Tinchuley Monastery is another tourist destination here.

Tinchuley View Point offers 180 degree view of the Eastern Himalayas. The view of the sunrise from here, with the snow peaks of Kanchenjunga as the backdrop, is excellent.

Gumbadara view point offers magnificent  view of river Rangeet and parts of Sikkim. There are many caves and rocks which can be explored / trekked from here.

River Teesta & River Rangeet confluence at a nearby place called Triveni. It is one of the most beautiful sights. You can see both rivers in different colors at the confluence as Rangeet waters are crystal clear, whereas Teesta with its mountain stream waters has a different color. Sikkim mountains can be seen on one side.


Takdah is another beautiful village near Tinchulay at a distance of around 3 kilometers.  Takdah Monastery, a small monastery,  is situated here.

During World War I, Takdah was one of the the most strategic locations for the British. Army camps were setup  here, which is now known as Takdah Cantonment, a military cantonment of the Indian army.

Durpin Dara Viewpoint (Dara means hills) is at a distance of around 10 kilometers from Takdah, within the Cantonment. The sight of river Teesta flowing through the picturesque landscapes makes you spellbound.

Zang Dhok Palri Monastery alias Durpin monastery or Durpin Gompa is situated here. Consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976, this  new monastery is situated on the Durphin hills.  Durpin Gompa has 108 volumes of Kangyur (sacred texts recognized by various schools of Tibetan Buddhism), other holy books and scrolls that were taken out of Tibet, after the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese in 1959.


Mongpu is another nearby village where the summer residence of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore is situated. Its now converted into a museum.

How Do I Go to Tinchuley?

Tinchuley is at a distance of around 28 kilometers  from Darjeeling and takes around 1.5 hours by car.  New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station and Siliguri Junction railway station are the two nearby railway stations at a distance of around 73 and 68 kilometers, respectively. Kalimpong hills, another nearby tourist destination, is at around 35 kilometers distance.

There are direct buses to Takdah from Darjeeling. If you are coming from Siliguri, Jeeps and shared taxis are available. They ply  up to Takdah. From Takdah, you can hire a taxi to reach Tinchuley, which is at a distance of around 3 kilometers.

There are a few resorts here. Rai resort Tinchuley  is a leading one. Guest houses and home stays are also available.

Ajodhya Hills

Ajodhya Hills is a picturesque hill station at an average altitude of 748 feet or 228 meters. It is situated in Purulia district, West Bengal – Jharkhand state border in India. Ajodhya hills is part of the Dalma Hills and an extended part of Eastern Ghats. Gorgaburu alias Gorshabru is the highest peak in Ajodhya range of mountains.

Turga Dam, a Lake and a hydroelectric project are situated here. The hydroelectric project, Purulia Pumped Storage Project, is situated at Ajodhya Hills. It has a total installed capacity of 900 Mega Watts (4 X 225 Mega Watts). Damodar, Kangsabati, Kumari and Subernarekha rivers flows through Purulia district.

Ajodhya hill tour for the adventurous includes Trekking to the hills along the stream side and deep forests. Its ideal place to learn rock climbing. Bird watching is a major activity here. You can also enjoy the wildlife here. Its a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Strikingly scenic, this picturesque hills are known for its  landscape photography.

It is believed that Lord Rama and Goddesses Sita stayed at Ayodhya Hills, while in exile.

How Do I Go to Ajodhya Hills?

Bagmundi. is the nearest town to the hill station at around 12.5 kilometers distance. It takes more than two hours to drive this distance, through the serpentine hilly roads. Purulia town is at around 40 kilometers from Ajodhya Hills Bus Stand. It takes more than 7 hours to cover this distance. Jamshedpur is at around 76kilometers distance and takes around 16 hours of drive.

Purulia Junction railway station with station code PRR, under South Eastern Railway zone is the nearest railway station. Currently, Iis a three way junction. Once the Bankura / Durgapur direct line constriction is over, this station will become a four way junction.

Bokaro Airport, Sonari Airport at Jamshedpur and Dhanbad Airport are the nearest airports at 64 kilometers, 80 kilometers and 100 kilometers distance respectively, from Ajodhya hill station.

Victoria Memorial Hall, Museum

Victoria Memorial is memorial at Kolkata in memory of Late Queen Victoria (1819–1901) of England.

Victoria Memorial Hall construction was started in the year 1906 and the foundation stone was laid by the then Prince of Wales, who later became King George V. (Prince of Wales was the Grandson of Queen Victoria). The memorial construction was completed in 1921 and was opened to public in the same year. This hall is now a museum and is called Victoria Memorial Museum. It is situated on the banks of the Hooghly River,

Victoria Memorial museum was designed by the great Architect William Emerson. Emerson was the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The funding was a collective effort of individuals of the British Raj in India, erstwhile Princely states of India and the British government.

Victoria Memorial museum was constructed with same type of marble used for the construction of Taj Mahal, in Indo-Saracenic revivalist style. The building is 338 feet in length and 228 feet in width. The height of the memorial hall is 184 feet. There is a beautiful garden spread over an area of 64 acres, designed by David Prain and Lord Redesdale.

Victoria Memorial museum has 25 galleries, including the Royal gallery. Some of the other prominent gallerias includes the central hall, the arms and armory gallery, national leaders gallery, the portrait gallery, the sculpture gallery and the Calcutta gallery which was added a quarter century back. Rare and antique books of William Shakespeare, Omar Khayyam, etc, can be found here.
