Government museum or Madras Museum Chennai or Egmore Museum is the second oldest museum in India (after the Kolkotta Museum). Egmore Museum was opened in 1851 and has a rich collection of archaeological and numismatic items. The Museum is credited with having the largest Roman antiquities collection outside Europe. The Colossal Museum Theater, a 19th-century theater , is one of the most popular attractions here.

Government Museum Chennai was housed in a building at College Road, Nungambakkam from 1851 to 1854, before it was shifted to the present building complex at Egmore, Chennai. A Library and reading room started functioning from 1859. The present Museum Complex at Chennai has six buildings and 46 galleries, spread over an area of around 16.25 acres.

An A/C 3D theater is under construction. The theater proposes to screen a 20 minute long film, five times daily and the equipment are to be brought from the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata. There is a Museum of Children inside the premises.

Government Museum Chennai is also a “Manuscript Conservation Center”. Thousands of manuscript books were given preventive or curative care treatments.

The first Zoo of Madras, which is now situated at Vandaloor near Tambaram, was also established in the same premises in 1855.

How Do I Go To Government Museum Chennai?

Government Museum Chennai is situated at the heart of the Chennai city on Patheon road, Egmore. Government Museum is situated next to Connemara Public Library and Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children (Children’s Hospital), near Patheon Flyover. Its around one kilometers from Egmore railway station, one of the oldest railway stations in south India. Chennai Central railway station is the nearest major railway station at around 3 kilometers distance from the Museum, which is connected to almost all parts of the country. There are local bus services from almost all parts of the Chennai city to Egmore.

Opposite to the museum, there is a three storied building with many rooms. It is called ICSA Program Center. It is run by the some Christian management. ICSA Program Center and the rooms are in the same building. The front portion is the ICSA Program Center, whereas back portion has the rooms available for rental. Room rent is quite cheap and is suitable for budget conscious travelers.

There are many a/c rooms with lift facility. The air conditioners looks old. Still the atmosphere is calm and quite with ample car and bike parking. Tea and snacks are available here. Its quite difficult to find out this place. The entrance is close to a big banyan tree, opposite to where Casa Major road joins Patheon road.

This Museum has the largest collection of antiques belonging to one single person. SalarJung Museum’s huge collection of sculptures, carvings, textiles, manuscripts, ceramics, metallic artifacts,clocks, paintings, carpets, furniture, etc, were sourced from Nawab Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889-1949), former Prime minister of the 7th Nizam (erstwhile ruler of the princely state) of Hyderabad. There were much more valuable items in his collection. Few of such priceless collection items from the national museum are believed to have been siphoned off by his employees. Some other items were siphoned off during the transfer of the collection from the original museum Diwan Deodi to the present museum Salar Jung Museum.

Some of the priceless items in the Museum includes Raja Ravi Varma Paintings, Sword of Great Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Great Mysore King Tipu Sultan‘s wardrobe , gold and diamond made Tiffin box, etc, to name a few. Jade crafted daggers belonging to the Mughal Emperor Jehangir and Emperor Shah Jahan (son of Jehangir) and Noorjahan (wife of Jehangir and step-mother of Shah Jahan) are also part of the collection at the Museum on the banks of Musi river .

Salar Jung Museum Clock

Salar Jung museum clock is a musical clock which is very popular with the tourists. This 19th century Musical clock has a bearded man‘s toy figure on the left side of the clock, which comes out from the enclosure exactly three minutes before every hour. On completion of each hour, this bearded man strikes the bell as per the number of the hour. i.e The Bearded toy man strikes the Bell 10 times at 10 O’Clock. There is another bearded man on the right side, who strikes every second.
