Suruli Falls, Silapathikaram, Agastya Rishi

Suruli Falls is a 150 feet high, two stage cascading falls near Cumbum Town in Theni District, Tamilnadu state. After falling into a pond, this waterfall again plummets another 40 feet.

The falls is on the Suruli River, which originate in the Meghamalai mountain range. Meghamalai mountain range is part of Pothigai Malai or Pothigai hills, which is divine to Hindus.

It is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddesses Parvati were married at Mount Kailash. Due to the presence of the large number of holy beings witnessing the marriage, Mount Kailash got unbalanced. Therefore, Maharishi Aagastya or Agastya Muni (meaning Saint Agastya) was sent to this mountains by Lord Shiva. He was asked balance the world, which he did successfully. At the same time, Agastya Muni was able to visualize the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddesses Parvati, at a Shivalingam at Tiru Kalyana Teertham, at Pothigai hills. This area is frequented by saints, on full moon days. There is an idol of Aagastya Muni, situated at the peak of Agasthyamalai.

Many 11th Century caves can be found near Suruli Falls. These caves are fine examples of Indian rock-cut architecture. Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) conducts an annual summer festival at Suruli falls. Chinna Suruli or Cloudland Falls is another falls, at around 54 kilometers distance from Theni town.

Suruli Aandavar temple (Subramania Swami temple) is a famous temple at Suruli hills. Suruli Velappar Temple, shaped like an OM Pranava, is one among the nearby tourist attractions. (Om is a sacred icon in Hindu religion. Om is also a sacred mantra in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism.)

Suruli Falls is mentioned in Silappathikaram, the ancient Tamil epic written by Ilango Adigal.

How Do I Go to Suruli Falls?

Suruli Falls is well connected by roads. Tamilnadu state government buses are available frequently from Cumbum and Uthamapalayam. Cumbam is the nearest town, at a distance of 10 kilometers from the falls. Uthamapalayam town is at around 20 kilometers distance from the Falls at Surali. Theni Town is at around 55 kilometers from the falls. The falls is on the way to Periyar National Park.

Chandipur Beach is a famous beach on the Bay of Bengal coast, known for Beach resorts. The water recedes by 5 kilometers during low tide, which helps the bio-diversity of the area and home to a large number of Horseshoe crabs. This beach is a unique beach. Unique because, the beach may not be there during the high tide. Chandipur is situated in Baleswar District of Odisha state in India.

This Beach and its surroundings are spread over an area of around 51.330 acres or 0.20773 square kilo-meters. Chandipur is also known by names ‘Chandipur-on-sea’, as well as ‘Chandipur on sea’.

Ministry of Defence’s Integrated Test Range for missiles is situated at the nearby  Abdul Kalam Island, which was formerly known ad Wheeler Island.

Budhabalanga River meets Bay of Bengal and the confluence of the river and sea can be seen near Mirzapur, not far off from Chandipur Beach.

Devkund Waterfalls, Nilgiri Jagannath temple, Emami Jagannath temple, Panchalinegeswar, Khirachora Gopinath temple, etc, are some of the nearby tourist attractions.

How Do I Go to Chandipur Beach?

Chandipur Beach is at a distance of is 16 kilometers from Balasore railway station; the nearest railway station. There are buses, autos and taxis available from Balasore. National Highway 16 connects the beach town of Chandipur with other parts of the country,

The nearest airport is at Kolkata, at a distance of 204 kilometers. The other major airport to the beach is situated at Bhubaneswar city. The Temple City of Bhubaneswar is at a distance of 294 kilometers from Chandipur Beach.

Kuruva island is another tourist place where entry is restricted to 200 persons per day (first come first served). Be there in the morning by 6 am or 6.30 am.

Phantom Rock alias Cheengeri Mala is natural rock formation near Ambalavayal in Waynad. This archaeological structure is a rare scene. This rock formation looks like a skull. It is at around 26 kilometers distance from Kalpetta Town and can be reached by trekking alone.

Theme Park at Wayanad

E3 Theme Park is a private park at Wyanad offering Magnetic Free Fall, Zip line, Rappelling, rock climbing, Rifle shooting, Archery, Paintball, etc, among various adventure sports. Magnetic free fall  slightly different from bungee jumping.  This place is situated within the Vanjode Post Office limits. There is also a Dinosaur Park at E3 Theme Park.

Other Nearby Tourist Places in Wayanad

Thumbithullumpara Waterfalls, Olichuchattam Waterfalls, Manjappara Waterfalls,  Pathangayam Waterfalls and Chembukamathi Waterfalls are some of the other not so famous nearby falls.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, as its known officially, is one among the nearby tourist attractions.

There are other natural  cliff jumping sites (into waterfalls) at Wyanad.

How Do I Go to Lakkidi?

Vythiri is the nearest town at around 5 kilometers distance from Lakkidi.

If you are planning to come from Kozikode by road, you need to cross the scenic Thamarassery pass. (This pass is part of NH 766, connecting Kozhikode with Kollegal, via Mysore.) The pass starts from Thamarassery. It ends at Lakkidi. There are many hair-pin beds on this serpentine scenic road. The distance from Kozhikode alias Calicut is around 58 kilometers. It takes around 2 hours drive to cover this distance. Sultan Battery town is a major town on the same NH 766, if you are coming from Mysore side.

Kozhikode is the nearest railway station. The nearest airport is the Kozhikode International airport at Karipur. It is at a distance of around 28 kilometers from Kozhikode city.

Nilambur Road Railway Station is another nearby railway station at around 73 kilometers distance. There are no trains to other cities from Nilambur Road Railway Station. Shoranur–Nilambur Road passenger trains are the only trains on this 66 kilometer railway line. Nilambur Town on the Kozhikode–Ooty highway is at around 4 kilometers from Nilambur Road Railway Station. Angadipuram railway station is the other station on Shoranur -Nilambur Road route.

There is a proposal to extend this railway line to Nanjangud Town railway station, near Mysore in Karnataka. The proposed line is to pass through Wayanad , Nilagiri and Chamarajanagar districts of Kerala, Tamilnadu and Karnataka states, respectively. The Planning Commission has sanctioned the estimated project cost of Rs.4266 cores for the proposed railway line.

Malappuram Town is at 40 kilometers away. Palakkad Town is at around 150 kilometers distance from Lakkidi.
