Indian Honeymoon Destination – Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal  or Kodai, is beautiful hill station on the Western Ghats, a UNESCO Heritage Site. There are a lot of tourist places in and around  Kodaikanal. Kodai is called the ‘The princess of Hill stations’. It is also an Indian Honeymoon Destination.

Places of Tourist Interest in and around Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal Lake

Kodai lake is a man made lake, made in the eighteenth century, is the major tourist attraction in Kodaikanal. It is spread over 60 acres of land in the heart of the city, a few hundreds meters away from the Kodaikanal Bus Stand. You have to come down (take the road which slops downwards). There is a boat house on the lake side road near to the The Cartlon (in front of the boat house) and is one of the leading hotels in Kodaikanal. They have a specially decorated honeymoon boat as part of their honeymoon packages.

Kodai is among the best Indian honeymoon destinations in India. Going for a boat ride at Kodai Lake, walking around the lake which takes around one hour, horse riding on the lake road, etc, is the best way to enjoy the splendid beauty of the Kodai lake. You can also go for cycling around the lake (bicycles are available for hire).

Once while I was on a boat ride inside the Kodai lake, all of a sudden it started to rain. Clouds looked as if they touched the lake waters!

Coaker’s Walk

Coaker’s Walk is another tourist place where you can go for a walk, walking on the paved pedestrian path along steep slopes of the mountains. Coaker’s Walk is around half kilometers from the Kodaikanal Bus stand on the opposite side of the Kodai Lake. You have to take the road which Goes Up, at the junction when you come out of the Kodai bus stand. On a clear day, this path gives excellent view of the valley and the Dolphin Nose , another tourist place. Periyapalam town, which is the nearest town on the valley, and Maduarai, a city quite far off, can be seen from here. It is one of those sought after honeymoon destinations at Kodaikanal.

Dolphin Nose

Ddolphin nose is a flat rock, projecting out at 2000 meters height above sea level, at 8 kilometers away from the Kodaikanal Bus stand and local sight seeing package tour normally covers Dolphins Nose.

Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves or Devil’s Kitchen

Pillar Rocks are 3 giant 400 meter high rocks, at around 8 kilometers from the Kodaikanal bus stand. Guna Caves or Devil’s Kitchen are a group of bat infected caves near Pillar rocks.Padma Shri Dr. Kamal Hassan starred Tamil movie, titled “Guna”, was shot here and hence the name Guna Caves. It is closed to public.

Silver Cascade

Silver Cascade, a beautiful fall on your way uphills, at around 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal city. You can stop there while going up or going down the hills and enjoy the beauty of this falls.

Suicide Point or Green Valley View

Suicide Point or Green Valley View is another beautiful tourist spot at around 5.5 kilometers from the Kodaikanal Bus stand which is covered under city site seeing package tour. This spot gives excellent view of the valley down.

Bear Shola Falls

Bear Shola Falls, is a beautiful fall deep inside the forest which needs one kilometers trekking; reserved only for the adventurous.

Solar Observatory

Solar Observatory which is situated at the height point in Indian Honeymoon Destinations – Kodai, is another place worth visiting at around 6 kilometers from the Kodaikanal Bus stand.

Bryant Park

Bryant Park, is a Botanical Garden and park, very near to the Kodai Bus Stand at half a kilometer away from Bus stand. You can see a very large verities of Roses, more than 700 varieties of the King of flowers can be seen at Bryant Park. Around 325 species of other trees, shrubs etc are there in the 20 acre park. Byrant Park is one another sought after honeymoon destinations at Kodai. There is also a Bodhi tree. Gautham Buddha used to sat and meditate under a Bodhi tree at Gaya, in Odisha state of India.

Kurunji Andavar Murugan Temple

Kurunji Andavar Murugan Temple is situated at 4 kilometers from  Kodai city,  famous for the Kurunji flower, which blossoms once in every 12 years.

Vattakanal Falls

Vattakanal Falls is another waterfall in Kodai. Little bit of trekking is required to go near to the falls. During summer season, this falls goes dry. It is worth visiting the falls, when there is water in the falls. Liril Falls is on the Golf Links Road. Fairy Falls is another small fall on the Fairy Falls Road, formed by the overflowing waters of a reservoir. These falls and the nearby areas offers mesmerizing view of the nature.

How Do I Go to Kodaikanal?

Kodaikanal is easily accessible by road from Madurai and Palani, two nearby famous temple towns in Tamilnadu state of India. There are regular bus services, both government and private buses, connecting Kodaikanal with all major towns in South India.

Kodai Road is the nearest railway station to Kodaikanal. It takes around 2 hours drive from Kodai Road Railway Station to reach Kodaikanal city. Kodai Road is in between Thiiruchirapally (Trichy) and Madurai; after Trichy and close to Madurai, when you are coming from Chennai. Kodai Road is on the National Highway Number 7, which was renumbered as NH 44 recently, connecting Varanasi in Utter Pradesh to Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu.

Maduari Airport is the nearest airport to Kodai. Madurai is  famous for Meenakshi Amman Koil. Coimbatore is also not far off. Nearest International airports are Chennai International Airport and Cochin International Airport at Nedumbrassery,Kerala.

Kodaikanal Hotels and Kodaikanal Resorts

There are many hotels and resorts at Kodai.  ‘The Cartlon’ and ‘Sterling resorts’ cater to the high end tourists. Hotels are centered mainly in and around the Kodaikanal Bus stand and the lake. Room rents double during the summer season at Kodaikanal, an Indian honeymoon destination.

Tip: During season time room rents doubles at Kodai, ‘The princess of Hill stations’. On your first day and (or) on the last day of your Kodaikanal trip, you may stay at any budget hotels or motels in any of the following roads. Trichy – Dindigul road NH 45 or Trichy – Maduari road NH 45B or Dindigul – Madurai road NH 7 or Theni – Madurai road NH 49. You can choose the road based on where you are coming from or going back. This avoids the high room rents in Kodaikanal resorts and Kodaikanal hotels.

This hill station town is at an elevation of approximately 300 to 3000 meters above sea level. Jakhu Hill, at 8000 feet which is the highest peak, offers superb view of the Himalayas and the Shimla valley. The hill top has an old temple of Lord Hanuman which attracts tourists. Statue of Lord Hanuman in this temple is the single statue that stand at the highest altitude.

Shimla State Museum is another major tourist spot.

How Do I Go to Shimla?

This hill station is connected by road to all the major towns. National Highway No 22 connects Shimla to the city of Chandigarh. Indian Capital city of New Delhi, is at 223 miles distance. Air conditioned Volvo buses are there from New Delhi office premises of the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation, tickets can be booked using their online booking systems. These buses start their journey from the I.S.B.T. (Inter State Bus Terminus) at Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi, India.

The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge Mountain railway track, was constructed in the year 1906. There is broad gauge and narrow gauge tracks at Kalka station. The Broad Gauge line connects Kalka to the rest of India.. This mountain railway line has more than 806 bridges and 103 tunnels. The completion of this railway line was touted as an engineering feat and was known as the “British Jewel of the Orient”. UNESCO has declared this railway line as part of “Mountain Railways of India” and is a UNESCO World heritage site.

Shimla Jubbarhatti Airport, is at around 20 kilometers distance from the hill station city, This airport connects the Indian Capital City of New Delhi with the hill station. Kullu is also connected by flight services from Shimla.

Which are the Good Shimla Hotels?

There are hundreds of hotels offering online hotel booking. Hotels online booking can be done through Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation’s  (a state government enterprise) site up to one year in advance.
