Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary alias Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is in god’s own country, i.e. in the southernmost state in India, Kerala. It is an animal sanctuary. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is on the way from Kozikode or Calicut (old name) in Kerala state and Mysore in Karnataka state.

Edakkal Caves are two caves inside the Wayanad wild life sanctuary, which have pictorial writings believed to be drawn around 6000 B.C., and is the only such cave in South India. These caves gives ample proof of existence of pre-historic civilization in the area.

Silent Valley Nation Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a nearby National Park.

Tomb of Pazhassi Raja (3rd January 1753 – 30th November 1805) , Kerala Simham or the “Lion of Kerala”, can be seen at Mananthavadi.  He was the de facto head of the kingdom of Kottayam and fought with The British East India Company and Hyder Ali of the Kingdom of Mysore. There is a Memorial at the site of his burial spot .

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary alias Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by road, rail and air. Kozhikode has the nearest Airport and Railway station to Wayanad Wild life Sanctuary. Night travel through the forest route in Kozhikode – Mysore route is not allowed. Night travel is prohibited by courts to save the wild animals from the speeding motor vehicles, passing through Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary at night.

June to October are the ideal months to visit this wildlife sanctuary at Wayanad district. There is an entry fee to be paid an the entrance.

Meenmutty Falls Wayanad

Meenmutty Falls Wayanad is located at around 30 Kilometers from Kalpetta. It is in Wayanad District, Kerala State, India.  Karnataka and Tamilnadu states borders are very close to Wayanad.

There is another water fall with the same name, Meenmutti falls, in the same state. It is near the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram.

Meenmutty  falls from a height of 300 meters; a three tier water fall. It is one of the best waterfalls in Wayanad district and and can be reached by trekking 2 kilometers from the Ooty main road.

Meenmutty water fall is little away from the main road.

En route to Meenmutty waterfalls is the famous “Pookode lake“, which offers boating facilities. There is also a Park for kids and space for walking for those health freaks. Pookode Veterinary college, one among the two veterinary colleges in the state of Kerala, is here in this village.

 

Eddakal caves

Eddakal caves, 10 kilometers from Wayanad, is another major nearby tourist spot. There are boats, which can carry 6 people, available to cross the river and reach the island.

Kuruva Island

Kuruva Island in Kabini river is another major tourist destination.   475 persons are allowed per day; as on  30th of November 2018 (this may be subject to change). Entry fee to the island is INR 89/- per person.  Entry to the island is during October to May.  9 am to 5 pm is the entry time.

Kuruva island is at around 15 kilometers from Mananthavady, 40 kilometers from Kalpetta and 58 kilometers from Sultanbathery.
