Ramakrishna Math Alias Belur Math at Belur (Kolkotta)

Ramakrishna math is a math in memory of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, the great 19th-century saint (1836-1886), on the banks of the Ganges River at Belur, Kolkotta. It is also known as Belur Math as it is located at Belur. This math is also known as Ramakrishna Ashram.

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are the organizations that undertake the spiritual movement called Ramakrishna Movement or Vedanta Movement. Ramakrishna Ashram is a monastic organization for men. Ramakrishna Mission was started by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), a great disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, which has monks of Belur Math at Belur and devotees conducting social service, mainly in India. Ramakrishna Mutt (Mutt and math mean monetary) and Ramakrishna Mission are financially separate entities. Though both organizations are two separate legal entities, both are closely related or inter-linked and are regarded as twins.

Ramakrishna temple is the main attraction here. The temple architecture is a combination of Hindu, Christian, and Islamic motifs. Swami Vijnanananda, a brother-monk of Swami Vivekananda designed this temple.

Holy Mother’s temple is another attraction here. The temple is dedicated to Sarada Devi, the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Brahmananda’s temple is another temple dedicated to Swami Brahmananda, the first president of the Math and Mission, who was a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

Ramakrishna Museum is a museum displaying artifacts used by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda, and some other disciples.
