Nainital Hill Station, Lake District of Uttarakhand

Nainital Hill Station is in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas in the Uttarakhand state of India. This hill station is also known as the Lake District of Uttarakhand, set in a valley with a pear-shaped lake surrounded by mountains. It is approximately 8580 feet (2278 meters) above sea level.

Nainital Lake, at the heart of the city, is the most famous tourist spot in Nainital Hill Station. There is a bridge over the lake, the only one of its kind in the world, with a post office on top of the bridge (a few shops also on it).

Naina Devi Temple is another tourist destination on the northern shore of Nainital Lake, reconstructed after the great landslip of 1880. You can get an excellent view of the hill station, overlooking the lake, from the Nainital Devi temple.

Snow View, atop the Sher-ka-danda Ridge, reachable by cable cars, offers excellent views of the snowbound Himalayas.

“Naini Peak,” alias “China” or “Cheena Peak,” or “Naina Peak,” is the highest peak in this Hill station at the height of 2,615 meters or 8,579 feet above sea level at a distance of six kilometers from the Northern end of the town. You can get a panoramic view of the snow-clad mountains and the Nainital town from here. You can go to Naini Peak by trekking or on Pony back.

“Tiffin Top,” also known as “Dorothy’s Seat,” is an excellent viewpoint for tourists to the Lake District of Uttarakhand.

Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo at Nainital is the highest altitude Zoo in India, with some of the high altitudes endangered Mammals as inhabitants.

“Eco Cave Gardens” is a garden next to the Kumaon University Campus with six caves and a musical fountain.

The high court of Uttarakhand is situated at this hill station town.

New Delhi, The Capital of India, is around 275 kilometers from Nainital Hill Station and takes 6 to 7 hours to drive. National Highway Number 87 connects the hill station with other parts of India.

New Delhi Airport is the nearest airport with commercial connectivity to the rest of the world. (The nearest airport is 65 kilometers away at Pantnagar, which does not have commercial flight operations and has only chartered flights.)

Kathgodham railway station, with station code KGM, at around 33 kilometers distance, is the nearest railway station on the foothills of Kumaon hills. There are daily trains connecting Kathgodham with New Delhi, Howrah (Kolkotta), etc.
