7 Votory Gates

Jodhpur ka Mehrangarh, or Mehrangarh Fort is at an elevation of 410 feet above the city. There are seven gates for this historic fort, namely Jai Pol, Loha Pol, Fateh Pol, Amrita Pol, Doodkangra Pol, Gopal Pol, and Bheru Pol. To commemorate the victory of the Jodhpur army over the attacks by the Jaipur, Udaipur, and Bikaner armies, Maharaja Man Singh built one among the seven gates known as The Victory Gate, Jaipol, or Jayapol. Maharaja Ajit Singh built yet another victory gate, Fattehpol, to commemorate the Jodhpur army’s triumph over the Mughals. Another gate, Dedh Kamgra Pol, still has the cannonball’s scars caused by the Jaipur army’s attack. Loha Pol is the last gate to the Mehrangarh fort complex.

The Practise of Sati

Remains of the marks of Sati, a practice prevailing in those days, when a woman burns to death on her husband’s funeral pyre, can be seen immediately to the left of the Loha Pol. This happened in 1843, after the demise of Maharaja Man Singh.
