Golkonda was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Golkonda, ruled by the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Sultan Quli formally established the Qutb Shahi dynasty in 1538, based at Golkonda. The original mud fort was built centuries back, during the region of the Kakatiya dynasty. The first three Qutb Shahi sultans expanded the fort into the present structure. Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (Fifth Sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty) shifted the capital to Hyderabad.

This magnificent fort is famous for its acoustics design. Hands clapping at the entrance can be heard on the top spot, around one kilometer away.

There is a light and sound show at the fort in the evenings for one hour. The first show begins at 7 pm on all days, from November to February. The second show is held from 8.15 pm onwards. The Telugu show is conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Hindi shows are conducted on other days.

Golconda is famous for mines. The world-famous Kohinoor diamond or Koh-i-Noor diamond was probably mined from Golconda. It’s now part of the British Crown Jewels. It originally belonged to the Kakatiya dynasty rulers. It changed hands many a time due to wars. It is believed to have been processed by Gwalior Kings, Mughal emperors (like Babur, Shah Jahan, Aurangazeb), Persian ruler Nader Shah, Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani, Sikh emperor Ranjit Singh, etc, among various Indian and Persian rulers.
