Netarhat Hill Station alias Queen of Chotanagpur is a popular hill station in the state of Jharkhand in India. The highest point lies at an altitude of 3,696 feet or 1,127 meters above sea level.

Established in 1975, this Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many endangered species of animals like the Bengal Tigers, Leopards and wild Bison. Kailash Caves, Kutumsar Caves and Dandak Caves are among some of the marvelous stalactites and stalagmites formations found anywhere in the world. These caves are the finest gifts of nature; Nature at its best! These caves are formed over millions and millions of years of limestone deposition! One inch of stalactites and stalagmites formation takes around 6000 years! Imagine how long it would have taken to form the huge pillars and chandeliers at theses caves!

Kailash Caves, Kutumsar Caves and Dandak Caves are situated in Kanger Valley National Park in Bastar district of Chattisgarh state, India.

Kailash Caves are million of year old caves found deep inside the forests situated near to Tiratgarh waterfalls. Kailash Gufas (Gufa in Hindi means cave in English) are underground caves, formed of stalactites (which means hanging limestone pillars) and stalagmites (which means pillars raising from the ground). There is a “Shivlingashaped stalagmite formation in this cave! Kailash Gufas or caves are 200 meters in length, 35 meters in width and have 55 meters depth.

Kutumsar Caves or Kotumsar caves are underground caves of 1327 meters in length, at around 40 feet below the ground level, found near to Tiratgarh waterfalls. You need to take the narrow spiral staircases to go down to go to the Kotumsar caves. The Kutumsar Caves are also stalactites and stalagmites formations, formed over millions of years! You also come across some species of genetically blind fish here in Kutumsar Caves! Kutumsar Caves are pitch dark even during the peak summer months, and you need to have candles lit to see this beauty of nature! Kutumsar Caves are the world’s second largest natural caves, with five natural chambers and a few wells (where the blind fishes are found).

Dandak Caves are large underground caves atop hills. Unlike the Kailash and Kutumsar Caves where you go down the stairs; here you need to climb around 500 stairs to reach the Dandak caves. At the very entrance to the Dandak Caves, you come across a marvelous rock formation, highly symmetrical in looks, which makes you to admire the beauty of nature! Once you walk a few more steps, you come across a giant hall which can accommodate even 500 people, with beautiful chandeliers like stalactites formations! The floors at Dandak Caves are smooth.

How do I go to Kailash Caves?

Kailash Caves are situated at around 40 km from Jagdalpur, in Bastar district. Buses to Raipur (capital of Chattisgarh state), Bilaspur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Nagpur, etc. are available. Many National Highways of India passes through Jagdalpur (NH 221, NH 30, NH 16). Many other National highways connects Raipur,the state capital of Chattisgarh, to the rest of India. You can drive close to the Kailash Gufas by vehicle.

Sirpur is a small town on the banks of river Mahanadi in the district of Mahasmand in Chattisgarh state of India. Sirpur is famous for its Archaeological Monuments dating back to 5th century A.D.

Sirpur was previously known as Shripur and was the capital of South Kosal kingdom. Laxman temple, a magnificent 7th century brick made Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is the major attraction at Sirpur. The Laxman temple at Sirpur is built on a massive platform with steps on South and North sides. The Laxman temple is one of the best brick temples of ancient India. This temple and its surroundings are rich with other ancient historical monuments. There is a museum inside the Laxman temple premises, which is run by the The Archaeological Survey of India. There is a Ram temple close to the Laxman temple.

Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar is a Buddist monument built by Bhikshu Anand Prabhu, a follower of Gautham Buddha. It is made up of 14 rooms and there is a six feet statue of Gautham Buddha, touching the earth, can be seen here.

Swastik Vihara is another Buddhist Vihar which was recently excavated near to the Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar.

Gandheswar Shiva temple is another historical temple on the banks of Mahanadi river. This temple also is rich with its historical remains and ‘Shiva Leela’ pictures.

There are a total of 12 Buddh Viharas and 1 Jain Vihara at Sirpur. Monolithic statues of Lord Mahavira and Buddha are also seen here. 22 Shiva temples and 5 Vishnu temples are also there at Sirpur.

Sirpur is a paradise for those looking for Archaeological Monuments in India. Huien Tsang, the famous 7th century Chinese traveler had visited Sirpur and written about the monuments in Sirpur. Most of these historical monuments were believed to have been destroyed due to a major earth quake in the 12th century A.D. This has resulted in devastation of massive historical buildings into heaps of clay and stone. What remains now are still the pride of the India, and the region.
