Visit the Niagara of India – Aathirapally Falls

Athirapally Waterfalls, on the Chalakudy River, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India. This fall is in the Thrissur District of Kerala and is known as The Niagara of India.

Chalakudy River originates in the Anamudi mountains, the highest peak in south India, in the Idukki district. Anamudi is part of the Western Ghats and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Athirapally Falls, water surges around massive rocks near the falls and then cascades down as three. Overall, this fall looks like Niagara Falls.

Another major waterfall on the same Chalakudy River, Vazhachal Waterfalls, is at a distance of five kilometers away from Athirapally Waterfalls.

How Do I Go to the Niagara of India, Athirapally Falls?

Athirapally, Indian Niagara Falls is well connected by road, train, and air. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport at 55 kilometers away. Chalakudi railway station on the Palakkad – Ernakulam route is the nearest railway station, around 30 Kilometers away.

Cochin alias Kochi or Ernakulam is 55 kilometers away. Nedumbrassery Airport, alias Kochi Airport, is the nearest airport to the falls.

Taxi and bus services are also available from Chalakudy town to the falls. You must buy entry tickets at the ticket counter, near the falls. The ticket counter opens at 8 a.m.

Chalakudy – Malakkaparabus bus services (2021 October update)

KSRTC Chalakudi station operates daily bus services to Malakkapara and back to Chalakudi. The rates are Rs 204 per single person. The bus starts at 8.30 am on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

It stops at Athirapally viewpoint, Charpa waterfalls viewpoint, Peringalkuthu dam reservoir viewpoint, Aaanakayam bridge, Viewpoint of the valve house and penstock pipes of Sholayar dam, Nellikunnu viewpoint, and Malakkapara tea estate, other than hotels for food, snacks, and tea.

Is Accommodation Available Near Athirapally Falls?

Of course, staying facilities are available in nearby towns like Chalakkudi (a small town), Thrissur alias Trichur (a nearby city), or Ernakulam alias Kochi (the largest city in the state of Kerala).

Plantation Valley is a farm resort 32 kilometers east of Chalakudy (near Vazhachal Falls). It is owned by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala Ltd, a Plantation company established by the Government of Kerala. Rainforest and Riverok Villas are other resorts near the Athirapally Falls.
