Muthupet Lagoon, Reserve forest, Sanctuary

Muthupet Lagoon is located on the River Cauvery delta near the Bay of Bengal, in Tamilnadu, India. Its spread over an area of around 6,803 hectares. Some portions of the Lagoon covered with mangroves.

Rivers Koraiyar, Kilaithankiyar, Marakkakoraiyar, Paminiyar, and tributaries of the Cauvery river flows through this scenic area. There are many canals and sub canals here, which are maintained by the Tamil Nadu forest department.

Muthupet reserve forests covers the Lagoon. Average death of the waters of the Lagoon is around 1 meter. Lagoon bed is covered with slit. Tides play a major role in dispersing the mangrove seeds. Point Calimere Sanctuary is situated close to this area.

How Do I Go to Muthupet Lagoon?

Muthupet Lagoon is at around 8 kilometers from Muthupet town in Thiruvarur district. Boats are available for you to explore the Lagoon.

Muthupet Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the Lagoon at Muthupet. Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Karaikudi Towns are at around 90 kilometers distance from Muthupet town. Mannargudi town is at around 34 kilometers distance from the Lagoon at Muthupet.

Some of the nearby Airports are situated at Madurai, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and Chennai. Madurai and Tiruchirappalli are at a distance of 165 and 110 kilometers distance. Chennai is at around 370 kilometers distance from this beautiful Lagoon.
