Three storied Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, sacred abode of Lord Shiva, is believed to be built in 6th century B.C on the banks of Rudra Sagar lake. The main deity is placed as dakshinamurti, i.e. facing the direction of south. Ujjain Jyotirlinga temple is the only such temple among the 12 Jyotirlinga temples.

The present day structure of the temple was built in 1736 and renovations were carried out in later years.
