Weekend Getaway at Yelagiri Hills for Chennai and Bangalore Residents

Yelagiri Hills is situated near to Vellore (Katpadi) in Tamilnadu, India. These Hills are beautiful hills, at an altitude of around 1400 meters above sea level.

Every year, there is a summer festival conducted at the end of May end. The summer festival attracts a lot of tourists. Flower Show, Dog Show and other Cultural Programs marks the Yelagiri Summer Festival.

Jalagamparai Waterfalls at 14 kilometers distance from Tirupattur town is a beautiful fall nearby.

Another nearby hill station Yercaud lies at around 150 kilometers from Yelagiri.

How Do I Go to Yelagiri Hills?

Yelagiri Hills in between Vaniyambadi and Jolarpettai towns, (i.e. after Vellore and Ambur, if you are coming from Chennai, on the NH 46). It is is located off Vaniyambadi – Tirupattur state highway. You need to take the serpentine ghat road from Ponneri Junction, with 14 hairpin bends. This ghat road offers a breath-taking view of the valley.

Bangalore is the nearest airport at 190 kilometers away from Elagiri. Chennai airport is at 220 kilometers away. Jolarpettai Junction in between Salem and Kadpadi stations (railway station name for Vellore) is the nearest major railway station to these hills.

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple’s main deity is Godesses Parvathy or Meenakshi as it is called in this temple. 133 feet high, 7000 ton, Tiruvalluvar Statue is situated at another rock island, very close to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. It was opened on First day of January,  2000. Thiruvalluvar was a Great ancient Tamil poet and saint, who wrote Thirukural. Certainly,  Thirukural is the most famous work by Thiruvalluvar.

Mahatma Gandhi memorial is another famous tourist destination here. In short, Cape Comorin is an important tourist destination in South India.

How Do I Go to Kanyakumari, Cape Comorin?

National Highway 44 connects Cape Comorin to Srinagar. This highway is incidentally the longest National highway in India. NH 66 connects cape with Panavel (on the outskirts of Mumbai).  NH 47  connects Salem with  Kanyakumari.

Kanyakumari is a major terminal Railway Junction.  Trains to major  cities of India like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkotta, etc, are available from this station.

Indian Honeymoon Destination – Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal  or Kodai, is beautiful hill station on the Western Ghats, a UNESCO Heritage Site. There are a lot of tourist places in and around  Kodaikanal. Kodai is called the ‘The princess of Hill stations’. It is also an Indian Honeymoon Destination.

Kodaikanal Lake

Kodai lake is a man made lake, made in the eighteenth century, is the major tourist attraction in Kodaikanal. It is spread over 60 acres of land in the heart of the city, a few hundreds meters away from the Kodaikanal Bus Stand. You have to come down (take the road which slops downwards). There is a boat house on the lake side road near to the The Cartlon (in front of the boat house) and is one of the leading hotels in Kodaikanal. They have a specially decorated honeymoon boat as part of their honeymoon packages.

Kodai is among the best Indian honeymoon destinations in India. Going for a boat ride at Kodai Lake, walking around the lake which takes around one hour, horse riding on the lake road, etc, is the best way to enjoy the splendid beauty of the Kodai lake. You can also go for cycling around the lake (bicycles are available for hire).

Once while I was on a boat ride inside the Kodai lake, all of a sudden it started to rain. Clouds looked as if they touched the lake waters!

Coaker’s Walk

Coaker’s Walk is another tourist place where you can go for a walk, walking on the paved pedestrian path along steep slopes of the mountains. Coaker’s Walk is around half kilometers from the Kodaikanal Bus stand on the opposite side of the Kodai Lake. You have to take the road which Goes Up, at the junction when you come out of the Kodai bus stand. On a clear day, this path gives excellent view of the valley and the Dolphin Nose , another tourist place. Periyapalam town, which is the nearest town on the valley, and Maduarai, a city quite far off, can be seen from here. It is one of those sought after honeymoon destinations at Kodaikanal.

Ddolphin nose is a flat rock, projecting out at 2000 meters height above sea level, at 8 kilometers away from the Kodaikanal Bus stand and local sight seeing package tour normally covers Dolphins Nose.

Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves or Devil’s Kitchen

Pillar Rocks are 3 giant 400 meter high rocks, at around 8 kilometers from the Kodaikanal bus stand. Guna Caves or Devil’s Kitchen are a group of bat infected caves near Pillar rocks.Padma Shri Dr. Kamal Hassan starred Tamil movie, titled “Guna”, was shot here and hence the name Guna Caves. It is closed to public.

Silver Cascade, a beautiful fall on your way uphills, at around 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal city. You can stop there while going up or going down the hills and enjoy the beauty of this falls.

Suicide Point or Green Valley View

Suicide Point or Green Valley View is another beautiful tourist spot at around 5.5 kilometers from the Kodaikanal Bus stand which is covered under city site seeing package tour. This spot gives excellent view of the valley down.

Bear Shola Falls

Bear Shola Falls, is a beautiful fall deep inside the forest which needs one kilometers trekking; reserved only for the adventurous.

Solar Observatory

Bryant Park

Bryant Park, is a Botanical Garden and park, very near to the Kodai Bus Stand at half a kilometer away from Bus stand. You can see a very large verities of Roses, more than 700 varieties of the King of flowers can be seen at Bryant Park. Around 325 species of other trees, shrubs etc are there in the 20 acre park. Kodai Road is the nearest railway station to Kodaikanal. It takes around 2 hours drive from Kodai Road Railway Station to reach Kodaikanal city. Kodai Road is in between Thiiruchirapally (Trichy) and Madurai; after Trichy and close to Madurai, when you are coming from Chennai. Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary

Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary is in Churu district of Rajasthan State in India at a distance of around 210 kilometers from Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan state, on the Ratangarh – Sujangarh Highway.

There are very few trees in the park. Many migratory birds pass through this park in September. Harriers is the major migratory bird among them which flies in distinct groups of male, female and immature.

‘Mothiya’, with sweet seeds, is a type of grass seen in this part of the park. Mothiya is the food for black bucks and migratory birds. Local people also eat this seed.

85 kilometers from the district headquarters of Churu, lies the Tal Chhapar Wildlife Park, on the Nokha to Sujangarh state Highway. Bikaner in Rajasthan is at 132 kilometers distance from the Wildlife Park .

‘Chappar’ is the nearest railway station on the Degana – Churu – Rewari railway line.
